Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has said community secondary schools have an equal opportunity of performing as well as other institutions in final exams.
He encouraged students studying in such institutions not to be discouraged by what people said about their schools and instead study hard to beat them in exams.
The Premier made the call on Monday when handing over a laptop computer worth 2m/- to a student who became victorious in the EAC secondary schools essay competition 2015.
The student who won top prize at the competition, Jabir Mandando (20), completed his Form Four level of education at Mbekenyera Secondary School in Ruangwa District, Lindi Region.
In his final exams, the student scored Second Division and is currently waiting to join Form Five. He wrote the essay last year when he was in Form Four.
“This is a village youngster who comes from Namilema in Ruangwa District and attended Mbekenyera community secondary school. Despite challenges, he managed to win the regional competition. This is very commendable,” the PM said.
Jabir became the third winner in the competition that involved schools across East Africa, from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
“Jabir managed to come out victor in the regional competition. I am so encouraged with his performance, that’s why I decided to award him a laptop to encourage him to study hard,” he said.
